Massive waves hit the coast of Jeju Island as Typhoon Maysak approaches waters south of the Korean Peninsula on Sept. 1, 2020.
Typhoon Maysak, which passed Japan's Okinawa islands Tuesday afternoon, is moving north-northeast towards the Korean Peninsula.
The season's ninth typhoon is expected get close to South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju on Wednesday.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the storm is packing strong gusts and could drop up to 400 millimeters of heavy rainfall on the island.
If it continues on its path, it will likely make landfall along the southern coastline early Thursday, passing over Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongju, before moving out to the East Sea later that evening.
Maysak is expected to be stronger than Typhoon Bavi, which left only minor damage in its wake last week.
As the region is still recovering from one of the wettest monsoons on record, which triggered widespread flooding, there are concerns about the risk of storm surges and landslides.
