Foreign athletes participating in Tokyo Olympics next year will face regular testing, restrictions on mingling and potential punishment for non-compliance with health rules.
Organizers issued on Wednesday a 54-page report outlining how they believe the Games can go ahead, even if the pandemic is not under control by the delayed start date of July 23, 2021.
According to the plans, athletes will be screened for the coronavirus on arrival in Japan and undergo regular testing every four to five days during their stay in the Olympic Village.
They must also sign a code of conduct that includes avoiding speaking loudly, physical contact with others and the mandatory use of mask outside of training and competition.
Tokyo organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto said the strict antivirus curbs will make the games "different," but he hopes they can still be held in a celebratory atmosphere.
Japan will decide by next spring whether to admit overseas spectators.
