South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says North Korea has begun routine wintertime military drills.

JCS spokesman Colonel Kim Jun-rak told a regular briefing Tuesday that South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are closely monitoring the situation in the North.

The spokesman said no unusual movements have been detected so far.

The regime has been quiet militarily since it unveiled a new intercontinental ballistic missile and submarine-launched ballistic missile on October 10 to mark the 75th founding anniversary of the ruling Workers' Party.
