Seoul's new top nuclear envoy Noh Kyu-duk held his first officials talks with his Japanese counterpart, Takehiro Funakoshi, on Wednesday.
South Korea's foreign ministry said the two negotiators spoke over the phone and shared assessments on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
They also discussed cooperation to completely denuclearize North Korea.
This comes amid Seoul's push to work closely with the incoming Joe Biden administration and Tokyo to resume nuclear diplomacy with Pyongyang.
Noh also spoke to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun by phone on Tuesday.
Noh was appointed to his post on Monday, replacing Lee Do-hoon, who had served as nuclear envoy since September 2017.
