U.S. President Joe Biden has held his most extensive talks with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
In a video conference call lasting more than three hours, President Xi told Biden that China would have to take decisive measures if pro-Taiwanese independence forces crossed what he called "a red line."
The U.S. warned against unilateral moves to change the status of Taiwan.
Biden also raised concerns over human rights abuses.
The BBC's Barbara Plett Usher said President Biden would have wanted for the talks to be forthright.

Mr. Biden frames the relationship with three Cs -- aggressive competition, cooperation when possible and confrontation when necessary.
But he wants to make clear that this doesn't mean he's seeking conflict and that's something that the Chinese have not always understood.
It's not how they have always interpreted him.
So, he wants to use this summit, or this meeting as I should say, to clarify that.
It's what the White House calls establishing guardrails and they say it really needs to be done at the leadership level at this point.

The two leaders also exchanged views on North Korea, the White House said.
U.S. officials have insisted China could and should do more, including sanctions implementation, to help restart denuclearization negotiations with North Korea.
