Runners jump out at the starting line of the 2019 Boston Marathon.
The Boston Marathon has been canceled for the first time in its 124-year history due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The race had earlier been postponed by five months.
Mayor Marty Walsh said Thursday at a news conference that the event scheduled for September 14 has become "less and less plausible."
The marathon will be replaced by a virtual event in which participants who verify that they ran 26.2 miles or 42.2 kilometers on their own will receive their finisher`s medal.
The event, the longest-running annual marathon in the world, began in 1897 to commemorate the first modern Olympic Games in Athens the previous year.
