The Donald Trump administration has notified the United Nations that the United States is formally withdrawing from the World Health Organization.
The State Department on Tuesday said the withdrawal notice was sent to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres a day earlier.
It will take effect in a year, on July 6, 2021.
However, it could be rescinded under a new administration or if circumstances change.
Trump has blasted the WHO for its response to the coronavirus pandemic and accused the global body of bowing to Chinese influence, saying in May that it would lose U.S. support unless it makes changes.
Joe Biden, the presumptive U.S. Democratic presidential nominee, said if elected, he would reverse the decision on his first day in office.
