Police in Hong Kong have arrested Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy activist and media tycoon, for suspected collusion with foreign powers.

Lai was detained along with his two sons and four other people early Monday, on suspicion of breaching the new national security law.

The BBC's Mariko Oi has more.

The newspaper he founded, Apply Daily, has been very critical of Beijing.

But to see the live pictures of police raiding their office is quite astonishing in a city where free press was very famous because this is the first time the law has been used against media as well.

And of course, just last month, we saw the New York Times announcing that it was moving part of its Hong Kong bureau to South Korea, and several outlets have complained about foreign journalist visas not being renewed.

So, this arrest definitely is a significant blow to Hong Kong's status for its democracy.
