Trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange has been suspended because of a technical glitch.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange said on Thursday that all trading was stopped because of a problem in the system for relaying market information, and will not resume for the rest of the day.

Details on the problem were not immediately available, but Japan's Asahi newspaper said the cause was likely a mechanical failure, without citing sources.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange is the third largest bourse in the world after the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, with market capitalization of nearly 6 trillion dollars.

Elsewhere in Asia, trading was closed in South Korea and China for national holidays.
