U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper
Pentagon chief Mark Esper has highlighted the need to further enhance U.S. alliances and defense capabilities.
Speaking during a webinar hosted by the Atlantic Council on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Esper said the U.S. continues to face ongoing threats from rogue states such as North Korea and Iran.
He stressed that his priority since being appointed more than a year ago has been implementing a national defense strategy in the face of growing competition from China and Russia.
His comments come less than two weeks after the North unveiled a new, longer-range intercontinental ballistic missile amid stalled nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.
Esper also noted that the U.S. will have to deal with violent extremist organizations in the years to come.
