Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has urged residents to stay home as the city deals with a resurgence of the coronavirus.

According to local health authorities, over 500 new cases have been reported in the past week.

Lam asked citizens on Tuesday to "refrain from social gatherings."

She said people, especially the elderly, should stay at home, stressing that the next weeks are crucial.

The latest spike in cases has led to tougher restrictions, including the closure of entertainment venues such as karaoke bars and limiting public gatherings to two people.

It has also delayed a so-called travel bubble between Hong Kong and Singapore that was initially scheduled to begin in November.

The bubble would have allowed visitors to travel between the cities without undergoing quarantines if they tested negative for COVID-19.

Singapore's civil aviation authority said both cities decided to postpone the bubble beyond December.
