Japan's Hiroshima prefecture will conduct the first mass coronavirus testing in the country as it battles a surge in infections.
Local official Kazuhiro Saito on Friday confirmed reports that the tests would
be offered to up to 800,000 people living and working in parts of Hiroshima
City, which is home to 1.2 million people.
He told AFP, "We want to discover positive cases at an early stage to prevent the virus
from spreading, especially in the city area."
The governor of Hiroshima, Hidehiko Yuzaki, earlier warned that the city could soon come under a state of emergency due to rising cases.
Amid a third wave of infections, 11 regions, including Tokyo, are currently under a virus state of emergency, though Hiroshima is not one of them.
The country has confirmed more than 300,000 coronavirus cases, with just over 4,100 deaths.
