Antony Blinken has been sworn in as the 71st U.S. Secretary of State.
He took the oath of office Tuesday at a ceremony at the State Department, shortly after the Senate overwhelmingly confirmed his nomination with a 78-22 vote.
A longtime confidant of President Joe Biden, the 58-year-old will be tasked with reframing Washington's relationship with the rest of the world after four years of Donald Trump questioning international alliances.
Blinken earlier said "we have a great deal of work to do at home to enhance our standing abroad” and vowed to approach the world with both humility and confidence.
Blinken previously served as deputy secretary of state and deputy national security adviser during the Barack Obama administration.
Blinken said in a tweet that it's the honor of his life to serve as the top U.S. diplomat.
He is expected to start work Wednesday.
