The White House says President Joe Biden will promise 4 billion dollars for an international coronavirus vaccination program for poorer countries.

He'll make the announcement at a virtual meeting with leaders of the world's biggest economies on Friday.

The BBC's Steve Jackson reports.

This is a sharp about turn by the Biden administration from Donald Trump's position of refusing to support the global vaccination program, known as COVAX.

White House officials say half of the U.S. money will be released immediately, with the rest to follow over a two-year period.

The scheme is led by the World Health Organization, which President Biden rejoined as soon as he took office after Mr. Trump had pulled the United States out months earlier.

The G7 summit will consider not only the funding of COVAX but also how to secure enough doses for the 100 or more countries that have barely begun vaccinating their population.
