India has recorded its highest number yet of daily coronavirus infections, with nearly 104,000 confirmed cases.

Most are in the state of Maharashtra.

With more details, the BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan reports.

Officials say the situation in India has gone from bad to worse.

The government blames lax behavior and poor social distancing for the steep rise in cases.

Some doctors believe the new, more infectious strains of the virus are also a reason.

More than half of the reported infections are in the western state of Maharashtra, home to the country's film and financial capital Mumbai.

From today, the state's imposing restrictions as well as shutting shops, markets and malls.

There will be an evening curfew and a lockdown on weekends in place until the end of this month.
