Police in Southern California say golf legend Tiger Woods was driving around 135 kilometers per hour, nearly twice the posted speed limit, when he crashed his car earlier this year.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday that excessive speed was the sole cause of the February 23 crash that seriously injured the golf icon.
Villanueva said Woods was driving 135 to 140 kilometers per hour in an area with a speed limit of 72 kilometers per hour, which made him lose control of his Genesis SUV on the downhill stretch of road in Rancho Palos Verdes.
The athlete will not face any citations for his third high-profile collision in 11 years.
Still on the mend, Woods again thanked first responders as well as people who called 911.
He tweeted, "I will continue to focus on my recovery and family, and thank everyone for the overwhelming support and encouragement at this difficult time."
