The United States has slapped new sanctions on Russia over its alleged cyberattacks and interference in U.S. elections.

The BBC's Gary O'Donoghue has this report.

Ten Russian diplomats are being expelled and more than two dozen entities and individuals sanctioned.

Russia will also find it harder as a result to the move to raise money on the international debt markets.

The action is in response to attempts by Moscow to interfere in last November's election and the so-called SolarWinds cyberattacks, which infiltrated a number of federal agencies.

Washington said Russia's foreign intelligence, the SVR, was behind that attack.

Russia, in response, summoned the American ambassador in Moscow to warn the sanctions are a serious blow to mutual relations.
