A jury in the U.S. city of Minneapolis has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with murdering George Floyd, a Black man, last year.

The BBC's Larry Medowal has this report.

The jury has begun deliberations.

It could take an hour.

It could take a week.

They have to look at these three charges and arrive at an unanimous verdict.

The three charges are second degree and intententional murder, third degree murder, and second degree manslaughter.

And if even one of them is not convinced, in other words, if the defense was successful in raising reasonable doubt and any one of them is not convinced, they will be hung on that charge and he will not be found guilty of that charge.

There's a possibility that Derek Chauvin could be convicted of all, some or none of the charges.

Minneapolis and other cities across the U.S. have bolstered security as they brace for possible violence following the verdict.
