A sharp rise in the number of people in England infected with the COVID-19 variant first detected in India has led ministers to consider speeding up vaccinations.

The BBC's James Gallagher reports.

Ministers are concerned at the speed the Indian variant is spreading.

Public Health England says cases have jumped from 520 to 1,300 in the past week.

Most cases are in London and the northwest of England.

Search testing are in place in 15 areas and a rapid response team has been sent to go door to door in Bolton.

The government said it could not rule out fresh local or even regional restrictions in order to suppress the variant.

It's also considering changes to the vaccination campaign to reduce the time between the first and second jabs.
