The World Health Organization has warned that all countries must prepare for coronavirus surges linked to the new Omicron variant.
But, the WHO's director for the Western Pacific, Takeshi Kasai, said there was no information to suggest the need for a change in approach to the pandemic.
The BBC's Howard Johnson reports.

The tone wasn't alarmist.
This was business as usual as the WHO gathers more information and Dr. Kasai said that the number of countries reporting the detection of the variant are increasing daily and that the geographical distribution is likely wider than already reported.
But, he also talked about the fact that it definitely has increased transmissibility but said that there was no conclusive evidence on disease severity.
So, they will continue to monitor that in the coming days.
