The defense ministry says the South Korean military unit recently dispatched to the Strait of Hormuz continues to maintain a full readiness posture to cope with any situation amid tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
The 300-strong Cheonghae Unit expanded its operational area from the Gulf of Aden into the strait this week to protect South Korean citizens and vessels passing through the strategically important waterway.
Concerns have been raised over the maritime troops' safety and whether they are ready to meet fresh challenges.
Defense ministry spokeswoman Choi Hyun-soo said at a regular briefing today that they are ready to carry out operations under all possible circumstances.
She added that operation guidelines have already been issued and the government is not considering any additional logistical support as of now.
South Korea's move was welcomed by the U.S. but criticized by Iran as not fitting the friendly relations between Seoul and Tehran. ■
