The government is considering providing financial support for families separated by the Korean War to visit North Korea.
During a ceremony marking the Lunar New Year's Day at Imjingak in Paju, Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul said the government is mulling over helping the elders with the cost to visit their hometowns in the North.
He stressed that now was the time to heal the wounds from the division as time is running out for the separated families.
The remarks come after President Moon Jae-in vowed efforts to create opportunities for South Korean families to reunite with their loved ones in the North.
The two Koreas agreed in 2018 to hold video reunions among separated families but stalled nuclear talks between the North and the United States have hindered the events from taking place.■
