The government will recommend private companies extend their summer vacation period until September to prevent workers from taking trips all at once amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
In South Korea, employees usually take vacation between the end of July and early August.
But there are concerns this limited timeframe could result in overcrowding at popular vacation spots across the country and further increase the chance of the virus spreading.
During a regular press briefing Monday, Yoon Tae-ho, a senior health ministry official, said the government will instruct over 19,300 private companies with 100 or more employees to set their vacation period from early July to early September.
Yoon clarified it's just a recommendation and the move will not come with any incentives.
