The 21st National Assembly
Lawmakers are scheduled to hold a plenary session Friday to handle the country's largest-ever supplementary budget proposal, the third of its kind since the COVID-19 pandemic turned the economy on its head.
The budget plan, worth some 35 trillion won, was submitted by the government in early June, in an effort to help key industries cushion the shock from the spread of the virus and protect jobs.
Earlier, the assembly's Budget Coordination Committee held a review session on the bill and is hoping to put it up for a full floor vote.
But the passage of the budget is not likely to gain full parliamentary support.
The main opposition United Future Party has said it will not take part in the plenary session after it ditched the budget review process, taking issue with the ruling Democratic Party and its "unilateral" moves.
The rival camps have been at odds for a month over the distribution of standing committee chairs.
Despite the boycott, the DP plans to push ahead and pass the extra budget before June's extraordinary session ends on Saturday.
