U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun poses for a picture during a visit to South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 7, 2020.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun held a meeting Thursday morning with Suh Hoon, the new head of Cheong Wa Dae's National Security Office.
The presidential office said the two officials likely discussed ways to resolve strained inter-Korean ties as well as chilled relations between Washington and Pyongyang.
A day earlier, Biegun, who doubles as Washington's top nuclear envoy, said the Donald Trump administration fully supports South Korea's efforts to promote cooperation with the North.
The deputy secretary did not meet with President Moon Jae-in during his visit to the top office.
A Cheong Wa Dae official said there was no plan for such a meeting.
Biegun is set to wrap up his South Korea visit and head to Japan this afternoon.
