Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun has called on civic groups to withdraw their plans to hold rallies on National Foundation Day on October 3, amid concerns they could lead to another wave of new coronavirus infections.
Chung warned during a daily Central Disaster Management Headquarters meeting Wednesday that if the groups push ahead with the events, the government will sternly deal with them.
He also expressed his dismay over people still seeking to hold large public gatherings in light of the recent resurgence of COVID-19, which has partially been attributed to Liberation Day rallies held last month.
Chung stressed it is still too early for people to let their guards down as the health crisis continues.
