Defense Minister Suh Wook speaks during his inauguration ceremony at the ministry building in Seoul on Sept. 18, 2020.
New Defense Minister Suh Wook says he will push ahead with plans to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula by faithfully carrying out an inter-Korean military agreement reached two years ago.
Suh made the vow on Friday during a change of command ceremony at the Ministry of Defense in Seoul.
He noted that North Korea has not been taking steps to improve the security situation in the region amid efforts by South Korea and the international community to establish a peace regime.
The defense chief also emphasized his plans to swiftly carry out the transfer of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul.
Suh previously served as Army chief of staff and was picked by President Moon Jae-in last month to take up the new post.
He replaces Jeong Kyeong-doo, who served as the head of the ministry for nearly two years.
