Suh Hoon, the director of the National Security Office of South Korea's presidential office, is expected to sit down with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for talks in Washington on Thursday.
According to an informed source at the State Department, Suh arrived in the United States on Tuesday.
Further details were not immediately available, including the purpose of his trip.
The Korean envoy's unannounced visit comes amid strained inter-Korean ties and stalled negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea.
