The city of Suncheon in South Jeolla Province has decided to raise its social distancing measures to Level 2 starting on Friday, amid a recent spike in new coronavirus cases.
The city is the first in the country to upgrade to Level 2 since a revised five-tier social distancing scheme was introduced earlier this month.
Mayor Huh Seok announced the move on Thursday, saying they had no choice but to toughen local rules to prevent further economic loss from COVID-19.
Suncheon confirmed 20 new cases on Wednesday after recording single-digit infections for the past month.
Under Level 2 distancing, gatherings are banned at five types of nightlife establishments, virtually shutting them down, while singing rooms, restaurants and cafes must close by 9 p.m.
Schools must also cap in-person attendance at one-third of the total student body.
