The government has warned that social distancing measures in the capital region could be upgraded further if daily coronavirus figures continue to hover above 200.
Senior health ministry official Son Young-rae said during a press briefing Thursday that antivirus regulations could be raised to Level 2 before the current tougher measures expire in two weeks.
Level 1.5 social distancing took effect in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province at the stroke of midnight and is scheduled to remain in place until December 2.
To prevent the need for stricter rules, which could take a toll on economic activities, Son called on residents to refrain from attending meetings, gatherings and company dinners.
He also said an increase in coronavirus cases could put a burden on the country's medical system as they are running out of hospital beds for coronavirus patients in serious condition.
