Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi could visit Seoul next week for talks with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.
Diplomatic sources said the two countries have been fine-tuning details on Wang's visit that is likely to begin on Wednesday, following his two-day trip to Japan.
The officials are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation ahead of the leadership change in the United States.
The agenda for the ministerial talks may include bilateral efforts to arrange a visit to South Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korea-related issues and cooperation on efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wang was expected to visit Seoul last month.
However, he delayed the trip, presumably due to a key Communist Party meeting and the U.S. presidential election.
