The foreign ministry says South Korea welcomes the inauguration of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and expects the alliance with the United States will develop further.
Ministry spokesperson Choi Young-sam relayed the government's stance in a commentary on Wednesday, saying Blinken "has ample experience and excellent leadership with a deep understanding of the bilateral relations and the Korean Peninsula issues."
During his confirmation hearing, Blinken said the Joe Biden administration will work with traditional allies, such as South Korea, to restore U.S. global leadership and tackle challenges that include a nuclear-armed North Korea.
He has also said they will review their "entire approach and policy" toward North Korea and find a way to bring the country back to the negotiating table.
