Defense Minister Suh Wook says South Korea and the United States will hold joint military exercises as planned in early March.
During a New Year's press conference Thursday, Suh said the training will consist of computer simulations, reiterating that they are defensive in nature.
He added that the two sides are discussing details, taking the COVID-19 situation into account.
North Korea has long criticized the allies' exercises as a pretext for war.
The minister said Seoul is ready to discuss the issue with Pyongyang via military channels in an effort to ease tensions.
Suh added that he will work to hold early talks with new U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about pending alliance issues, including the transfer of wartime operational control.
