Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said Friday that 1.3 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna will arrive in the country sometime next week.

He told an interagency meeting on coronavirus response that the shipment is expected on either August 6 or 7.

Kim said an additional 8.5 million doses will be supplied in August.

While noting there is a shortage of vaccines around the world, he said the government will make efforts so that shots it has already secured from pharmaceutical companies get to South Korea as soon as possible.

The prime minister, meanwhile, said vaccinations for people in their 50s are going smoothly, adding inoculations for those in their 40s and younger will be carried out swiftly next month.

Health authorities will announce a more detailed schedule for this age group during a briefing this afternoon.
