The health ministry says restrictions on private social gatherings, in place to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, will continue, for now.
Meetings of five or more people are banned nationwide, and in the capital region, gatherings of more than two people are prohibited after 6 p.m.
Ministry spokesman Son Young-rae told reporters Wednesday the measures are a crucial part of the government's social distancing campaign.
The official was responding to questions about comments made earlier in the day by Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, who told a local ration station that the two-person cap on gatherings in the greater Seoul area is hurting small business owners.
Son said the prime minister was not referring to a possible change to the rule.
