South Korea and the United States are beginning Tuesday a joint operation in Gangwon Province to excavate the remains of troops who died during the Korean War.
Seoul's defense ministry said the work will be carried out at Baekseok Mountain in Yanggu County, a key battle site during the three-year conflict.
American soldiers are said to have been killed at the site.
Ministry officials, Army soldiers and personnel from U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency will take part in the excavation through September 16.
Over 580 sets of remains have already been found in the area.
