South Korea plans to suspend the entry of foreign laborers with recent history of travel to southern African countries to block the spread of a new coronavirus variant.
The labor ministry said Monday the move could affect workers from 16 Asian countries.
A ministry official said they are consulting with health authorities about the details of the plan, such as the duration of the arrival postponement.
Earlier this month, the government announced it would resume visa issuance to migrant workers from Asian countries in line with South Korea's "living with COVID-19" scheme, which calls for the relaxation of strict antivirus rules to resume pre-pandemic life.
South Korea, like many other countries, has imposed travel restrictions on a group of southern African nations over the emergence of the Omicron variant, despite scientists warning it's not clear if is more contagious or causes more severe disease than other variants.
