President Moon Jae-in paid his respects Thursday to an Air Force pilot who was killed earlier this week in a fighter jet crash.
In a social media post, Moon expressed condolences to the family of the officer, who he said "died in the line of duty while protecting the skies of his country."
The pilot was flying a F-5 on Tuesday when the plane suddenly nosdived and crashed into a mountain in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, minutes after taking off from a base in Suwon.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
A day after the captain's death, the Air Force posthumously promoted him to the rank of major.
Officials said a funeral will be held for the late major on Friday and he will be laid to rest at the Daejeon National Cemetery.
