South Korea has donated over 5.7 million dollars in humanitarian assistance for North Korea so far this year to help improve its public health situation.

According to data from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as of Friday, South Korea has already delivered 4 million dollars to the World Health Organization and 1.7 million dollars to the North's Red Cross Society.

It adds to a total of more than 7.7 million dollars donated to the North so far this year, including over 1.3 million dollars from Switzerland and 672,000 dollars from Germany.

In December, the South Korean government revealed its plan to contribute money to help North Korea repair facilities in the Pyongan and Hamgyong provinces hit by typhoons and conduct trainings to strengthen the country's disaster preparedness.

It said it would also give 5 million dollars worth of donations to the WHO for a humanitarian project to increase access to medical treatment for North Korean women and children, 1 million of which was delivered last month.■
