North Korea has fired off three unidentified projectiles into the East Sea, a week after it launched two short-range ballistic missiles.

According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the regime fired the latest projectiles early Monday from areas near the eastern town of Sondok in Hamgyong Province.

No other details were immediately available, including the type of the projectiles, flight range and altitude.

The JCS said the South Korean military is monitoring the situation in case of additional launches and maintaining a readiness posture.

Last Monday, the communist country fired two projectiles from a super-large multiple rocket launcher, believed to be part of an artillery strike drill for its wintertime exercise.

Amid stalled denuclearization talks with the United States, the North test-launched missiles 13 times last year and warned at the start of this year that it would present a "new strategic weapon" in the near future.■
