North Korea is expected to hold a plenary Central Committee meeting of the ruling Workers' Party this week to "discuss and decide on an issue of crucial significance" that involves increasing the country's fighting efficiency.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency reported on Tuesday that the session will be held Wednesday, but did not provide further details.

Last week, the North held a politburo meeting to decide on setting up a new department in the Central Committee that will "make tangible contribution to safeguarding the dignity and interests of the state and people."

Some observers suspect the upcoming meeting could cover issues related to a new party organization as well as the new coronavirus and handling damage caused by recent heavy downpours and flooding.

During the last plenary meeting of the Central Committee held in late December, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened the world will soon witness a "new strategic weapon" and accused the U.S. of dragging its feet in talks for its own political interests.
