North Korea is unlikely to reopen its borders as it remains on high alert over the COVID-19 pandemic, despite continued claims that it is coronavirus-free.

An official from South Korea's unification ministry said on Tuesday that the North is unlikely to ease its border restrictions anytime soon.

The official added that Seoul has not detected any movement or activities in the North that indicate otherwise.

The comments came amid recent media speculation that the border closure between the North and China will be lifted.

Earlier this year, Pyongyang decided to close its border with China to keep the coronavirus out.

According to a report by the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Monday, leader Kim Jong-un called on officials to step up quarantine efforts and stay on alert.
