North Korea said Tuesday it test-fired two missiles a day earlier to confirm the accuracy of that weapon system.
The North's state-run news agency KCNA said the two tactical guided missiles launched in the western area of the country "precisely hit an island target in the East Sea of Korea."
South Korea assessed they were short-range ballistic missiles.
It marked Pyongyang's fourth show of force this year, including hypersonic missile launches, despite biting international sanctions.
Ignoring U.S. offer for talks, the North has warned of a "stronger and certain" response to any attempts to rein it in.
In a call with South Korean and Japanese officials Monday, Sung Kim, the U.S. special representative on North Korea, "expressed concern" about the missile launches and urged Pyongyang to return to dialogue "without preconditions," according to the U.S. State Department.
