The wildly popular South Korean drama "Squid Game" is up for two awards in the United States.
The nominees for the annual Gotham Independent Awards, which recognizes excellence in independent films and television, were released Thursday and included "Squid Game," a Netflix original, in the Breakthrough Series – Long Format (over 40 minutes) category, along with five other TV series, including Amazon Studios' "Small Axe" and HBO Max's "It's A Sin."
Its lead actor Lee Jung-jae was also one of 10 candidates for Outstanding Performance in a New Series, including Ethan Hawke in "The Good Lord Bird" and Anya Taylor-Joy in "The Queen's Gambit."
"Squid Game" is the only foreign-language show in the breakthrough TV series category, while Lee is one of two non-English performers to have earned a nomination, alongside French actor Omar Sy from "Lupin."
The Gotham Awards is one of the major film awards ceremonies in the United States in the runup to the Oscars slated for March next year.
The 31st annual Gotham Awards ceremony will be held on November 29.
