The head of the International Olympic Committee says athletes will not be barred from next year's Tokyo Games regardless of the COVID-19 situation in their homeland.
IOC President Thomas Bach made the remark Thursday during an Instagram chat with German javelin thrower Johannes Vetter, according to the news agency DPA.
Bach said, "If the athletes test negative, if they respect the anti-coronavirus guidance, we should give them the chance to participate."
He also said countermeasures are being prepared for the Olympics, which were postponed by one year due to the pandemic.
Tokyo organizers are considering an independent coronavirus testing and treatment facility within the athletes' village.
