The first openly transgender athlete to compete in an Olympics is set to make history on Monday when she competes in the women's super-heavyweight weightlifting competition.

Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand is seen as a medal contender in the 87kg category.

The BBC's Sarah Mulkerrins reports from Tokyo.

Ever since Laurel Hubbard qualified for New Zealand to represent the nation, it has sparked a debate.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee, they say she is a really important role model, that she opens up a conversation around inclusivity.

Some of her fellow competitors have been supportive of the move, of having her competing here.

There are critics, some athletes questioning her inclusion at these Games.

A key aspect around this conversation has whether she carries an advantage due to going through male puberty.
