Taking on the legend of Robin Hood can be a bit of a curse.
Kevin Reynolds' "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" starring Kevin Costner failed to impress the critics in 1991, though it did perform well, accumulating 390 million dollars.
Similarly, Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" was a critical disaster in 2010, which performed poorly considering its hefty 200 million dollar budget.
Perhaps the best-received adaptation was back in 1976 when Sean Connery picked up the bow and arrow in Richard Lester's "Robin and Marion."
The latest version directed by Otta Bathhurst, starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, has been the subject of a critical bashing suggesting the curse has yet to lift.
In truth, it's a challenging feat to defend a film that is wholly reliant on using existing formulas and imitating other films, not least Christopher Nolan's stupendous "The Dark Knight" both thematically and visually.
While Taron Egerton was a perfect fit in Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman", he is a total miscast in this latest outing, which is set to be one of this year's biggest flops, having already seriously underperformed both in North America and internationally.
