Hong Kong and southern China are under red alert as Typhoon Mangkhut is due to make landfall in Guangdong later Sunday, a day after the biggest storm of the year left at least 28 dead in the northern Philippines.
Nearly half a million people had been evacuated in Guangdong province and flights and rail services were halted.
This morning, the typhoon packed sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 190 kilometers per hour.■
