North Chungcheong Province has decided to retain statues of former Presidents Chun Doo-hwan and President Roh Tae-woo at a lakeside park in Cheongju, dismissing a civic group's request for their removal.
The provincial government announced on Thursday its decision to keep the statues installed at the Cheongnamdae Presidential Villa.
The site was formerly used by the nation's leaders as their summer retreat.
The civic group that commemorates the May 18 pro-democracy movement in Gwangju, which Chun and Roh were accused of suppressing, has long demanded the statues be dismantled.
Chun and Roh were both convicted of treason and bribery in 1996 and were deprived of privileges as former presidents, although they were later pardoned for their crimes.
