The southeastern city of Busan has stepped up local quarantine measures, including canceling year-end events, to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Acting Mayor Byun Seong-wan said during a press briefing Wednesday that popular New Year sunset and sunrise sites in the city like Haeundae Beach will be shut down from noon on December 31 to 9 a.m. the following day.

Restaurants and cafes will also have to suspend dine-in services at 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve for 12 hours, with only takeout and delivery allowed afterwards.

Byun said more temporary coronavirus testing centers will also be set up in areas with heavy foot traffic.

Three such screening centers have already been opened in the port city, including one at Busan Station.
